People often tell me that it’s a particular colour that first draws them to one of my paintings and I find it’s the same for me.
.
When I start I don’t know what colour the finished painting is going to be. I don’t plan out the colours , though things would be much simpler if I did.

.
I have tried this , but found that by doing that I remove the very thing that makes painting so engaging , so stimulating .
Colour choices in the moment are integral to how I work . If I’m working on a piece , trying to make it work, my brain is constantly problem solving , firing up about different colours. I need the freedom for the painting to develop wherever it needs to go without being constrained. …

I often find I get obsessed with a particular colour - I see it everywhere. My eye gets drawn to it in textiles, graphics, walls, other art. When I move onto making colour studies certain colours show up . I knew certain shades of green were going to feature somewhere but didn’t know it would take over almost all of the canvas of this one.
