This is the biggest painting I have worked on and i knew I had to adapt the way I painted to work at this scale. I wanted there to be evidence of the movement of my arm as I moved across with the brush. I wanted there to be subtle differences in the larger planes and here I built up thin areas of paint using unsaturated pinks.

This painting went through lots of different stages and gave me lots of problems to solve. I wanted the painting to work compositionally as well as having interesting elements to look at when up close. I am pleased with the the range of marks in this painting that came from experimenting in the other paintings in this series. When I took this painting out of my messy studio and outdoor into the sun, it suddenly seemed to come alive and it was clear that it was finished.

This was the first painting in this collection and the one that the whole series was built around. It began with some large free gestural marks using a large brush straight onto the canvas and from the beginning it felt fun and liberating to paint. It feels happy and playful . The light and airy palette with the pops of bright cheerful pinks and yellow make me recall fun and careless days .

This painting has a wide range of marks and I found myself taking more risks and pushing myself to expand the way I applied paint. I used different tools and felt bolder in my actions. My intention was to be less controlled and at times let the paint do the work before taking control again and bringing in some order with the more defined shapes.

A satin varnish will be added before sending. It comes ready to hang and is signed and dated on the back.

My intention with this painting was to begin to paint in a looser way, and be open to possibilities . As the painting developed I decided to try to keep the design strong and keep the larger shapes clear rather than breaking them down into smaller parts. I was interested in the straight edged shapes contrasted against the softer, looser more gestural brushwork in the background.

This is a small abstract painting on canvas painted in dark forest green, neutrals and a playful red shape that dances on the surface.

In this painting I wanted to focus on the impact of light and dark areas and also explore marks with lot of freedom and movement along side purposeful mark making. This painting was created over many sessions and has a textured surface evidence of the history of layers beneath as I explored these intentions.

I created this painting alongside “Forest’ but my intention was for it to be lighter and more playful. I included saturated pinks and greens which stand out more against the neutral muted background. I used a combination of thickly applied paint to cover up earlier layers and create soft shapes and then came in with more controlled loops and curves to connect the shapes.

Creating this painting was enjoyable as I aimed to include elements that really appeal to me visually. I wanted the painting to work from a distance as you see the two dark forms on a lighter ground. But closer up I like that there is so much for the eye to discover. I considered the exact colours that were next to each other carefully as well as the size of shapes and lines but overall it looks fun and effortless.
